NJ IS EASY, You just have to do it the right way.. Treat it as if you are a custom bike builder and that you have just built a bike and have an MSO for the frame.. Follow the simple rules that all the custom guys have to do and it will get done.. Or register it as a moped with a 49cc then just switch engines..

Ummm, these don't have pedels to start them. As a dealer we are getting the cold shoulder from MVC. Its nearly impossible right now for us to get these things legal. I came onto the forum to find out if anyone else has been able to do it.

JT

Can you tell us more about what you encountered with NJ DMV? Did you try and register is as a kit bike? What problems did they throw up at you?

In NJ you definatly can not register as a moped, the engine size in CC's is to big, it goes to fast and has no pedals.

While investigating titles in NJ I was directed to the Foreign Title Unit, 1-888-486-3339.

If you call them and tell them you have a garge built motorcycle they will send you out a "Title Kit" which is mostly state rules for all kinds of home built or reconstructed vehicles. But included will be a SS-7 form and a SS-143 form and a check list of doucuments you need to provide to get a title.

I have not done it yet but it seems you mail all this in first and they then mail you back a reconstructed title.... my only fear is they want you to send originals of things like your MSO of to who knows where?

got some bad news on sat. I talked to by buddy at the chopper shop and he said it would be very hard to register/title in nj. "pretty much impossible" were his exact words with a little chuckle thrown in there for good measure. To get it registered we would have to take the bike to trenton and have it inspected and there MUST be DOT stamps on everything. He said the best bet was to get it registered/ titled in PA (if you know anyone who lives there) and either ride it with the PA tags or try and transfer the PA title to NJ.

If by DOT stamps you mean

* NHTSA label
* EPA Noise Emissions label
* EPA Exhaust Emissions label

then you are right the bike can not be titled as a pre built bike because the hardknock does not come with these lables.

In NJ you need to register it as a kit bike or home built bike which would not have "DOT stamps" and yes you will need to take it to Asbury Park, Morristown or Trenton for a pre inspection before the DMV will issue VIN #'s or Title and Registration.
